Foothill pulls out win over No. 4 Santa Margarita in OT

STAFF WRITER

SANTA ANA - The lights on the lacrosse field at Foothill went off at 9 p.m.

Just moments before, Foothill senior Ellis Geis scored with 51.5 seconds left in overtime to give the Knights a victory over fourth-ranked Santa Margarita, 13-12, on Wednesday.

“It feels amazing,” Geis said. “Our guys didn’t give up. We were down … We came off a few losses and we were pumped to win this game. We just pulled through, all of us together.”

The come-from-behind victory required a team effort and plenty of fight from the Knights (6-5).

After scoring the first two goals of the game, the Knights were fighting uphill throughout the night. But late in fourth quarter, things started to break their way.

Geis scored at 7:49 of the fourth and Cole Falbo scored a shorthanded goal to tie the score at 12-12.

Both teams had possessions late in the game but failed to score, sending the game into overtime.

With less than a minute left in overtime, Geis gained possession and ended the game.

“I got the ball back and I looked at the clock and I just went,” Geis said. “I didn’t really think about it.”

Geis led the Knights with four goals. Falbo and Chris Hunter had two apiece. Five other players scored at least one goal.

After a slow first quarter, the Eagles looked comfortable in the second, scoring eight goals to take an 8-5 lead into halftime.

Santa Margarita scored the first four goals of the second quarter to overcome a 2-0 deficit.

After Foothill responded with three consecutive goals to take a 5-4 lead, the Eagles came right back with four consecutive to close the first half.

Quentin Buchman scored three goals in the second quarter.

The Eagles increased their lead to 10-6 on a goal from Nick Parrino in the third quarter. The Eagles kept the lead until Falbo’s goal that tied the score.

“It was just a battle,” Foothill coach Jon Fox said. “The guys came to battle, they showed they have heart and they wanted to prove they could finish a game out. They just kept playing … you keep playing, that’s all you can do.”

Buchman and Tyler Wrightson led the Eagles with three goals apiece. Jack Allender and Jack Fisher had two goals apiece and goalie Chad Cobb had a strong game making nine saves, but unfortunately, all of their accolades didn't add to a victory.

"We've had two overtime losses to the No. 2 and No. 3 (St. Margaret's) teams in the county," Santa Margarita coach Adam Guy said. "We can play tight with anyboy, but we have to learn how to finish, we have to learn how to play with a little heart and learn how to close games out.

"We need to have that killer instinct and I don't think that we showed it when we needed it the most. The kids have to find that killer instinct. I thought we had them backing up and then they made their runs like we knew they would and momentum shifted."
