Danner leads way as Huntington Beach pounds Los Alamitos

HUNTINGTON BEACH – Hagen Danner pitched five shutout innings and hit one of Huntington Beach’s three home runs Friday in the Oilers’ 10-3 win over Los Alamitos in a Sunset League game at Huntington Beach High.

Danner struck out seven. He allowed two hits and one walk. Danner, a senior right-hander who signed with UCLA, hit a two-run home run in the Oilers’ five-run third inning.

Cory Moore hit a three-run home run for Huntington Beach in the third. Nick Pratto added a solo homer in the fourth inning.

The win gave Huntington Beach the season series against Los Alamitos. The Oilers won two of their three league games against Los Alamitos. They had defeated the Griffins, 9-0, on March 17 and the Griffins beat the Oilers, 3-2, on Wednesday.

Huntington Beach is 13-3 overall and in first place in the Sunset League with a 5-1 league record. The Oilers are ranked No. 2 in Orange County and in CIF-Southern Section Division 1 (behind Orange Lutheran in both polls) and are No. 4 in’s California top 20.

Los Alamitos is 10-7 overall and 3-3 in league.

Huntington Beach scored a run in the first inning on Trevor Windisch’s single that drove in Pratto.

Pratto led off the third inning with a walk. Danner hit a high-arc home run to left-center field for a 3-0 lead. Windisch and Nick Lopez hit back-back-singles and Moore pulled a pitch over the right-field fence for a three-run home run to make it 6-0.

Huntington Beach added three runs in the fourth inning. Pratto hit his solo homer, Windisch delivered a run-scoring single and Lopez’s sacrifice fly plated the third run to push the lead to 9-0.

Pinch-hitter Luke Glascoe drove in the Oilers’ 10th and final run with a sixth-inning single.

Los Alamitos scored all of its runs in the seventh inning. Cole Gilbertson had an RBI single and Michael Magana added a two-run double.

Danner was happy with the velocity and location of his fastball.

“I was getting my fastball where I wanted it,” he said.

Baseball America rates Danner as the No. 53 high school prospect in the nation, and Pratto as No. 8.

Huntington Beach’s next game is a league home game Tuesday against Edison. After another league game at Edison on Thursday, the Oilers play in the Boras Classic tournament that starts April 18.

Los Alamitos plays at Tesoro in a nonleague game Saturday. The Griffins have two league games next week against Newport Harbor.

Huntington Beach coach Benji Medure said the Oilers, who last week went 2-2 in the National High School Invitational in North Carolina, have the ability score runs as plentifully as they did Friday.

“We didn’t score many runs in North Carolina,” Medure said. “But we had some good at-bats and we hit the ball hard. The game we played Wednesday (against Los Alamitos) we hit the ball equally as hard as we did today and they just didn’t fall in. That’s baseball.”
