All-County boys soccer: First team

The Register’s All-County boys soccer team for 2016-17.

FIRST TEAM

BRYAN IBARRA

Godinez, Forward, Sr.

The Register's player of the year.

DOM BAIR

Edison, Forward, Sr.

He tied for third in the county in goal scoring with 18. He added eight assists. He was selected Sunset League offensive MVP. He recorded six goals and two assists during league play.

GRANT JOYCE

Corona del Mar, Forward, Sr.

He scored 18 goals, which tied for third in the county, and it prompted Coach George Larsen to say that Joyce “has carried us all year.” He scored seven goals in 10 Pacific Coast League games, helping to lead the Sea Kings to the league championship.

RYAN BISHOP

Laguna Hills, Midfielder, Sr.

He ranked second in the county with 24 goals. Four times he finished with three or more goals. He also added seven assists and was selected co-MVP of the Sea View League.

ALL-COUNTY BOYS SOCCER

KYLE CAREY

Santa Margarita, Midfielder, Jr.

He was selected the Trinity League MVP. He finished with 12 goals and eight assists. “He has a relentless, hard-working, never-say-quit approach to the game,” Coach Wade Fraser said. “He is also very composed in front of the goal.”

DEVIN CORNEJO

Valencia, Midfielder, Sr.

He was selected MVP of the Empire League. He finished with seven goals and six assists to help the Tigers win the league championship and earn the No. 2 seed in the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs.

SAM KEMPER

Edison, Midfielder, Sr.

He was selected the Sunset League MVP after finishing with nine goals and 11 assists. He finished with two goals and two assists during the the Chargers’ five-game league winning streak which ended with a league championship.

ALEXIS PALACIOS

Godinz, Midfielder, Sr.

He was an Orange Coast League first team selection. He scored 11 goals, which was second on the team. He posted four multiple-goal games this season.

DREW BRUMMETT

Edison, Defender, Sr.

He was selected the Sunset League defensive MVP. He helped the Chargers have one of the stingiest backlines in the county, as they shut out 16 opponents and finished with a plus-39 goal differential.

JONATHAN, BRYANT

El Toro, Defender, Sr.

The South Coast League MVP scored both goals in a 2-1 against Tesoro in the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs, including a 30-yard strike to the upper left corner. He helped the Chargers post four shutouts during league play en route to winning the league championship.

JOSE MARQUEZ

Godinez, Defender, Jr.

He was selected Orange Coast League defensive MVP. He helped Godinez finish the season with a plus-80 goal differential, as the Grizzlies gave up just 15 goals and posted 16 shutouts.

ADAM ROECKER

Tesoro, Defender, Sr.

The four-year varsity starter was selected co-MVP of the Sea View League. He helped the Titans give up only 18 goals in 27 games. They finished with 14 shutouts and went through a three-game stretch without allowing a goal.

CONNOR VERONESE

El Dorado, Defender, Sr.

Coach Steve McManus called the team captain “the heart and soul of the team.” He took the long throws for the Golden Hawks and finished with 10 assists during the postseason. He also helped the Golden Hawks earn 14 shutouts, four of which came during the playoffs.

MAC HUTCHINS

El Toro, Goalkeeper, Sr.

He stopped two penalty kicks by Redlands East Valley to help the Chargers win the CIF-SS Division 1 championship game. He finished the season with eight shutouts, and he had a 0.800 goals-against average during the Southern Section playoffs. He was a South Coast League first-team selection.
