The CIF-Southern Section Council narrowly voted down Wednesday a proposal that would have moved the start of the high school baseball and softball season to Feb. 9.

The change would have gone into effect for the 2018-19 school year.

CIF State executive director Roger Blake, who attended the CIF-SS Council meeting in Long Beach, said there is a statewide effort to have sports seasons end before schools have graduations. In several spring sports CIF sectional and state championships are happening after graduations.

The CIF-SS Council vote was close – 36 voted to support the proposal and 37 voted to not support it, with three abstentions.

The baseball and softball seasons this school year began Feb. 25.

The CIF-SS Council voted to approve the language that would be in the CIF State rules and by-laws that pertain to competitive cheer. Competitive cheer becomes a CIF sport in the 2017-18 school year. The CIF-SS, though, would not have competitive cheer contests until the 2018-19 school year, and a season of sport – fall, winter or spring -- still has yet to be determined for competitive cheer.
